Transplanting

Whether you’re an experienced gardener adding new additions to your garden or an eager beginner just getting started, here’s all you need to know about how to perform a successful transplant. An important first step is to make sure your soil is prepared. A quick read of our soil and garden preparation guide will have you right on track and ready to begin!

Spring and Fall are usually the most favorable time to perform a plant transplant. Being able to avoid the intense summer heat would be ideal.

  • Before transplanting, make sure the plant is hydrated and healthy; a few days before, make sure to give the plants a good watering.

  • Before you dig, choose a new site for the plants you're relocating. Make a new planting hole that is approximately twice the width of the transplant. Don't dig the hole much deeper than the transplant's root ball. Use your best judgment for size; you're always able to make adjustments once the plant has been dug up.

  • Remove any dead branches and any leaves that are damaged.

  • Dig around the base of the plant approximately 3 inches from the base of the stem - 6 to 10 inches from the bases of larger plants. Ensure it's done carefully so that the root zone isn't damaged. If you come upon roots, dig a little deeper. Keep the root ball intact as much as possible.

  •  Consider using a tarp to lay the transplant on and even receiving extra help to lift it — the root ball will be fairly massive and heavy with soil, even for medium sized shrubs.

  •  After you've replanted your transplant, make sure it's well watered. Water regularly after that, just like you would any newly planted trees or plants. Make sure to water deeply enough to reach the entire root zone.

  • Want to know a gardening secret weapon? Mycorrhizal Fungi. Not only do they provide more nutrition and water but they can increase the root zone by up to 50%! This symbiotic relationship they add makes your plants more drought tolerant and way more stress tolerant to the elements since the fungi allow them to pull more necessities from the soil.

  •  Depending on the type of transplanting you’re doing, your soil needs may vary. Luckily at The Worm Farm Portland we have all the necessary mixes to make your transplant easy and successful. Gwen’s Premium Mix is our go to recommendation for veggies. Followed by our Happy Half Gwen’s & Kelp Mix and Compost Special Mix.
